Sabbath by Dan Allender

Although I enjoyed reading this book, and even enjoyed some of the practical ways the author celebrates the Sabbath, I was very disappointed in the lack of scriptural support for most, if not all of his points.  The book starts strong, stating that the Sabbath is still valid as one of the ten commandments but sadly from there dives into more “feeling” and mystical emotionalism focused on the creature rather than biblical imperative focused on our Creator.

Yes the Sabbath should be a delight but the purpose of the Sabbath throughout scripture is a focus on keeping the day holy and “unto the Lord”, not one where we spend time considering what might bring us the most pleasure or abandon.  If, indeed, we would spend our one day in seven focused totally and unashamedly on the glory of God we’d see that anything that we can conjure up as joyful will fall woefully short.

So, I’m giving the book 2 stars because it is an enjoyable read with some good thoughts.  If you’re looking for a more concrete biblical look at Christian Sabbath observance I’d suggest “The Lord’s Day” by Joseph Pipa.

I received this book as part of the Booksneeze blogger program and was not paid for the review.  The thoughts are my own - I was not asked to give a positive review in exchange for the free book.
